    Migration Destinations

    Where Should You Migrate?

Compare platforms and choose the best destination for your data and operations.

Which products in the Oracle Rdb family do you have?

    • Oracle CODASYL DBMS

There are no directly comparable database products that can be used  to replace Oracle CODASYL DBMS for OpenVMS, however the TranSSend solution provided by Software Concepts International can be used to replicate data from Oracle CODASYL DBMS into various modern relational database targets, providing DBMS users with a potential migration path.

    • Oracle Rdb

Please see the table below for possible alternative database solutions. You may also wish to complete the Oracle Rdb Migration Assessment, which will allow our team to help you evaluate your migration options and recommend the most suitable path forward.

    • Oracle CDD (Common Data Dictionary)

VMS Software has developed an alternative data dictionary solution that provides a high degree of compatibility with Oracle CDD and can be used as a near-drop-in replacement for most use-cases.

    • Oracle Trace

Oracle Trace is an event-driven data collection product for OpenVMS that collects performance and resource utilization data for Oracle Rdb and applications instrumented with the Oracle Trace API.  Please contact your VSI Account Manager to arrange a call with our team to discuss the options that are available and identify the most appropriate replacement solution for your particular use-

    • Oracle SQL/Services

Oracle SQL/Services provides an API and middleware that enables client applications on various remote systems to access Oracle Rdb databases running on OpenVMS servers. Equivalent solutions are provided by other modern database systems, such as those listed in the table below.

    • OCI Services for Oracle Rdb

The OCI Services software component enables Oracle Call Interface (OCI) applications to access data in Oracle Rdb databases. There is no equivalent OCI interface for non-Oracle databases, however comparable integration solutions are available, some of which are considered in this whitepaper.

    • JDBC and ODBC drivers for Oracle Rdb

Equivalent JDBC and ODBC drivers are readily available for the alternative database solutions listed in the table below.

    • Oracle Rdb Extension for SQL Developer

The Oracle Rdb Extension for SQL Developer enables users to connect to and manage Oracle Rdb databases from within the SQL Developer environment. Comparable developer tools are available for most of the alternative database solutions listed in the table below.

    • Oracle Rdb Connectivity Management (ORCM) and Developer Tools (ORDT)

Oracle Rdb Connectivity Management enables remote data access, remote database management, and application connectivity from various platforms, and Oracle Rdb Developer Tools is a free extension product that enables developers to build, manage, and deploy .NET applications using Oracle Rdb databases. Comparable tools are available for many of the alternative database solutions listed in the table below.

    • Oracle Rdb Replication Option

The Oracle Rdb Replication Option provides facilitates Rdb database replication for a range of replication topologies. Equivalent functionality is provided by all of the alternative database solutions listed below.

Tools & Solutions for Oracle Rdb Migration

We’ve compiled an overview of the migration tools, solution options, and technical assets available to support Oracle Rdb transitions. This white paper outlines what exists today and how different approaches may apply to different environments.

    Smart Planning

    Key Considerations Before You Migrate

Every Oracle Rdb environment is different. Migration planning should take into account application architecture, transaction volumes, external integrations, availability requirements, and operational constraints. Understanding these factors early reduces risk, downtime, and unexpected rework during the migration process.
